CHAPTER TWENTY

The drive to Lily’s was painfully quiet, the air thick with tension. The words that I wanted to say to her were stuck in my throat, threatening to spill out, but I held them back. My patience was wearing thin and my time was running out.

Glancing at Lily, my heart somersaulted. Her face was unreadable as she stared out the passenger window. Everything in me screamed to take her hand, but I forced myself not to.

When we arrived at her house, I killed the engine and shifted in my seat to look at her.

“Lily—”

She met my gaze, pulling her bottom lip between her teeth before shaking her head. “Don’t, Noah. I’m exhausted. I just want to go inside. I’ll see you soon, okay?”

“Yeah, I guess we did,” I snapped, unable to keep the emotion out of my voice. Our eyes met before I turned and went back to my vehicle. By the time I situated myself in the driver’s seat and glanced back toward the house, Lily was inside and the porch light was off.

When I finally pulled into my driveway, I left the unmarked running for a while and sat in silence. The gentle vibration from the engine helped my mind slip into a daze and I thought about the last several months and reflected on my various interactions with Lily.

The night she texted me about her separation, I had been so thrown off, it physically felt like the world had shifted on its axis. Immediately I was torn in two: a man in a relationship with his best friend that was basically a glorified friends with benefits, and a man who still hungered for a woman whom he had hardly spoken to over the last decade. How could I let down the one person who had made the last few months of my mundane life bearable in order to pursue the one who ignited my
